Thankfully this has never happened to me on a modern OS (Vista+). Of course the end result was the sound still didn't work in the end. It would incorrectly identify the audio driver and install the wrong one almost every time. The ONLY problem I've ever had with it was a few versions back (13.0 - we're on 15.10 now) with Windows XP machines (the Dell Dimension's especially).

It correctly identifies drivers and you can then either find them yourself via the manufacturer's website or you can install the version included in the driver packs. DriverPack will install drivers for free and solve driver problems on any device. DriverPack Cloud DLL search Software search Driver Search For System Admins. It's simple, fast, and rarely lets you down. Download drivers for Windows XP, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. I've tried the other suggestions for driver installers by members here, but always find myself going back to DriverPack solution. They just released an online only version of it too (2MB download), or you can download the entire driver pack (10.2GB) via torrent.

It's a Russian program, but has an English translation that's pretty good.

I like that you can install manually or automatically. Especially when you need to install WiFi/Ethernet drivers so you can download all the other drivers. It's great for offline installation of drivers.
